LABIAPLASTY IN FALL RIVER, MA

LABIA REDUCTION & VAGINAL REJUVENATION

Labiaplasty, the surgical reduction or reshaping of the inner vaginal lips, is the most popular type of surgical vaginal rejuvenation. Many women experience elongated or asymmetrical labia due to age, childbirth, or genetics. Besides the cosmetic concerns of this condition, enlarged or irregular labia can cause discomfort, restrict lifestyle, and impede physiological function. Labiaplasty offers a minimally invasive option to reduce these symptoms and rejuvenate the appearance of the labia with an outpatient procedure using local anesthesia. Furthermore, the patient can choose exactly how they want their labia to look to ensure they are pleased with the results.

If you think a labiaplasty may be right for you, contact Dr. Mark X. Lowney at Advanced Body Sculpting of New England by calling (877) 577-5476 or completing the online form.

UNDERSTANDING LABIAPLASTY SURGERY: WHAT TO EXPECT

Labiaplasty is the term that typically refers to reduction of the labia minora (technically known as a labiaminoraplasty.) The labia minora are the inner vaginal lips. They are different from the labia majora of the female genitalia, which are the outer, hair bearing areas between the labia minora and inner thigh. A Labiaplasty surgery reshapes or reduces the excess skin on the labia minora so the inner lips are “hidden” and do not hang down below the labia majora.

Labia reduction surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia with an oral or IV sedation. The procedure typically takes 30 minutes to an hour to perform and patients may return home after the surgery. It is a very customizable procedure allowing the patient to choose exactly how they want their labia to look after the surgery. After placing the local anesthesia, the extra labia is gently trimmed away and the edges are sutured together with sutures that dissolve (melt away) quickly and painlessly. Post-operative discomfort is minimal and easily controlled with oral pain medication. While individual experiences vary, most patients see complete healing within 2 weeks.

THE TRIM AND WEDGE METHODS

Cosmetic surgeons in Massachusetts typically use one of two main methods to perform a labiaplasty. The first method is known as the “trim” technique where the outer edge of the labia minora is reduced to the patient’s customized liking. The edges are then reapproximated with dissolvable sutures. This technique is especially popular when the outer edge of the labia minora has pigmented skin on it, i.e. melanosis.

The second most common labiaplasty technique is the “wedge” technique. This technique has many different modifications but all essentially remove a pie-shaped wedge in the middle of the labia minora. The upper and lower halves are then sewn together. This technique maintains the natural border of the labia minora. However, it does not remove pigmented edges and it does have a higher dehiscence (skin separation) rate.

LABIAPLASTY AFTERCARE

Labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure and patients may return home the day of their surgery. Discomfort is easily controlled with the use of oral pain medication and patients may return to work in one week. Showering may be resumed 24 hours after your surgery. Strenuous activity such as running or heavy lifting/straining should be avoided for 2 weeks. Sexual activity and the use of tampons should be avoided for at least 6 weeks after labiaplasty surgery. Further details about what to expect after your surgery and home care instructions will be provided in detail prior to your procedure.

LABIAPLASTY FAQS

The cost of your labiaplasty surgery depends on a number of factors unique to your personalized treatment plan, such as the method of labiaplasty you decide on and whether the labiaplasty is a stand-alone procedure, or performed in conjunction with other vaginal rejuvenation treatments, such as a vaginoplasty or a clitoral hood reduction. During your consultation with Advanced Body Sculpting of New England, labiaplasty cost will be discussed in detail, along with available financing options.

Many younger and older women have labia minora (inner lips) that they consider too large and unsightly. Unilateral or bilaterally enlarged labia minora can occur before or after childbearing. A labiaplasty may be right for you if you experience:

  • Enlarged or irregular labia that cause self-consciousness or embarrassment during sexual activity.
  • Interference with sexual intercourse due to labia being pulled or twisted into the vagina leading to unnecessary discomfort and embarrassment.
  • Chaffing and pain from labia rubbing up against panties or tight clothing.
  • Labia accidentally hanging out of bathing suit.
  • Labia causing deviation of urinary stream.
  • Labia causing an unsightly bulge visible when wearing a bathing suit, commonly known as “camel toe.”
  • Darkening or melanosis on the edges of labia minora

The term “labiaplasty” is commonly conflated with another popular vaginal rejuvenation surgery known as a vaginoplasty. While both rejuvenate the female genitalia, the two treatments are completely different procedures. Vaginoplasty focuses more on the interior organ to correct vaginal looseness. Labiaplasty surgery focuses more on the external genitalia or labia.

After getting a labiaplasty, swelling and itching are common side effects. Many people experience these symptoms for the first 5-7 days post-surgery. These side effects usually subside after a few weeks. To help manage swelling and itching, doctors recommend taking over-the-counter pain medication. Additionally, applying ice packs to the area and avoiding tight clothing or activities is also recommended. It’s crucial to follow your surgeon’s instructions so they can provide more specific advice on how to manage your recovery and when you will expect to feel better.

After a labiaplasty, the scar appears as a thin, white line located where the incision was made. The size and shape of the scar depend on the surgical technique used and the extent of the procedure. In most cases, the scar is not noticeable unless closely examined. It is common for the scar to fade over time and become less visible. Overall, the appearance of the scar varies from person to person. However, it is typically minimal and does not take away from the aesthetic results of the procedure.

One concern you may have about labiaplasty is whether it will affect your vaginal sensitivity and sensation. While there is no definitive answer to this question, some women may experience changes in sensation after the procedure.

The labia minora contain numerous nerve endings. Any surgery that involves altering or removing them can potentially impact sexual sensation. Some women have reported decreased sensitivity or difficulty achieving orgasm after labiaplasty.
However, it’s important to note that not all women experience changes in sensation after the procedure. Some women report improved sexual function and increased confidence and self-esteem after labiaplasty.

If you’re considering labiaplasty, it’s important to discuss any concerns you have about sexual sensation with your surgeon. They will help you weigh the potential risks and benefits of the procedure to make an informed decision about your body.
