According to the The American Society of Cosmetic Surgeons, it is estimated that over 250,000 breast augmentation procedures were performed in 2003. Breast augmentation was second only to liposuction as the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure.
Breast augmentation has one of the highest patient satisfaction rates in cosmetic surgery and it’s currently one of the most sought after procedures in this country. Regardless, the decision to undergo enhancement should not be taken lightly.
What Are the Differences Between Saline & Silicone Breast Implants?
Dr. Lowney has incorporated advancements in the area of minimally invasive cosmetic surgery into the breast implant procedure. Dr. Lowney’s procedure is performed under local or tumescent anesthesia as performed in liposuction surgery. You will be given oral medication to relax you. In the procedure, Dr. Lowney will make a small incision under the breast in order to create a pocket under the chest muscle. Placing the implant under the muscle results in an extremely natural appearance. It also reduces the possibility of rippling or a hardened capsule surrounding the implant. After the procedure is completed, you will be able to walk out of the office. However, we do require someone to drive you home. In addition, you will be required to visit our office for follow up appointments to monitor your progress and healing.
Saline breast implants are made of a silicone rubber envelope filled with sterile saline and is warranted by the manufacturer. While it’s possible for an implant to leak or break, this is extremely rare. Potential side effects of having the procedure include infection, bleeding, hematoma, pain, change or loss of sensation in the nipple area, visible edges of the implant, scar formation, encapsulation causing hardening of the implant area, and further procedures due to any of the above. While all of these events are rare, additional procedures are not uncommon. On a positive note, the psychological effects after your procedure will be noticeable, especially self-esteem and confidence.
Silicone gel implants are made of cohesive, pre-filled silicone gels. They are usually placed under the PECTORAILIS muscle through an incision made in the inframammary fold. Silicone gel implants are the most popular implants on account, that silicone gel implants feel and look more natural and ripple less.
