How Does Dr. Lowney Perform A Breast Augmentation?

Dr. Lowney incorporates advancements in the area of minimally invasive cosmetic surgery into the breast implant procedure to provide treatments that are safer, less traumatic on the body, require less recovery time, and ultimately deliver better results.

From consultation to recovery, here’s what you can expect:

    1. Consultation

If you’re interested in getting a breast augmentation, the first step is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Lowney. During this time together, you’ll discuss your medical history, cosmetic goals, implant options, and if you’re a good candidate for implants. You can share your desired size, shape, and implant preference, determining what’s the best fit for your body.

    2. Pre-Op Preparation

You will be given pre-op instructions on how to prepare for your upcoming breast augmentation. As your surgery approaches, you will need to stop taking certain medications, like blood thinners, and quit smoking at least two weeks in advance. Following these pre-op steps can help minimize your risks.

    3. Anesthesia

Dr. Lowney’s procedure is performed under total Intravenous General Anesthesia. In addition, you will be given oral medication to help you relax. You will be fully asleep during your breast augmentation, and our team can make sure you remain comfortable throughout your surgery.

    4. Breast Augmentation Procedure

In the procedure, Dr. Lowney will make a small incision under the breast in order to create a pocket under the chest muscle, which results in an extremely natural appearance. Placing the implant under the muscle also reduces the possibility of rippling or a hardened capsule surrounding the implant.

    5. Recovery

After the procedure is completed, you will be able to walk out of the office. However, we do require someone to drive you home. We’ll give you a list of aftercare guidelines to help your recovery go as smoothly as possible. In addition, you will be required to visit our office for follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and healing. While everyone’s recovery timeline varies, it generally takes 6-8 weeks to heal fully. Following Dr. Lowney’s aftercare instructions can help your body heal more quickly.

What Is The Difference Between Saline Breast Implants Vs. Silicone Breast Implants?

There are two main types of breast implants: silicone and saline. Each implant comes with individual advantages and disadvantages. The best implant choice for you depends on a number of factors. During your consultation with Dr. Lowney, we will help you determine which type of implant is best for your situation and most suited to meet your aesthetic goals.

    Silicone Gel Implants

Silicone gel implants are the most popular implants because silicone gel implants feel and look more natural and ripple less. Silicone gel implants are prefilled with an inert polymer, known as silicone gel. There are no known human allergies, reactions, or sensitivities associated with this gel. Similar to a gummy bear, the molecules in the silicone gel are bound together in a cohesive matrix, making it a more viscous material than saline, which ultimately provides a more natural look and feel. Silicone implants are placed under the pectoralis muscle through an incision made in the inframammary fold (below the breast where the breast and chest meet.)

    Saline Breast Implants

Saline breast implants are made of a silicone rubber envelope filled with a sterile saltwater solution, known as saline. The manufacturer warrants these types of implants. During the procedure, the silicone shell is inserted into the body and then filled with the saline solution to the desired size.

Which Implant Is Right For You?

As you are exploring your options, it helps to know the advantages and disadvantages of saline and silicone implants. Here is an overview of what you need to consider when choosing your implant type:

Understanding Implant Placement: Over vs. Under The Muscle

When getting breast implants, there are two placement options: subglandular (over the muscle) or submuscular (under the muscle). When the breast implant is placed over the pectoralis muscle of the chest, the implant is covered by the soft tissue and skin of the breast. This technique is less invasive and has a quicker recovery time. Additionally, it can create a more prominent and rounder look to the breast. Lastly, it is ideal for those who already have a substantial amount of breast tissue. In contrast, this technique may look less natural, especially if there is not enough existing breast tissue. Additionally, there is an increased risk of capsular contracture (scar tissue that forms around the implant, causing it to harden)

When the breast implant is placed underneath the pectoralis muscles of the chest, this creates more natural-looking results since the muscle covers the implant and creates a gradual slope to the breast. Additionally, there is a reduced risk of rippling as well as capsular contracture when placing implants underneath the muscle. This method is ideal for those who have a small amount of natural breast tissue. However, this technique is more invasive and carries a longer recovery time.

    Breast Implants Vs. Fat Transfer

A fat transfer is an alternative method for breast enhancement. However, there are a few cons to consider. Fat transfer relies on the amount of fat available in your body to increase your breast size. Therefore, there is a limit to how much fat the surgeon can transfer. This may result in your breasts not being as big or shapely as you hoped for. With breast implants, you can choose the size and shape of your breasts.

Another downside with a fat transfer is that the fat might not stay in your breasts permanently. Some of the transferred fat can be reabsorbed by your body over time, which means your breast size could decrease. This may require additional procedures to maintain the desired size.

Additionally, gaining or losing weight can affect the results of a fat transfer. Since the fat used for the transfer is from your own body, changes in weight could affect the size and shape of your breasts. Lastly, implants can be easily removed while it is difficult to remove fat once it is injected.

    Breast Augmentation FAQs

How Much Do Breast Implants Cost?

Breast Augmentation cost varies on the type and size of breast implant that the patient desires. In general, saline breast implants cost less than silicone gel implants. During your consultation with Dr. Lowney, the exact cost of breast augmentation will be discussed in detail along with available financing options.

What Is The Potential For Loss Of Nipple Sensation After Breast Augmentation?

It is not uncommon to have some sensory changes after breast augmentation. Generally, sensation does return, especially if the implant is placed below the muscle. Therefore, one should wait 3-6 months for nipple sensation to return. However, it is not uncommon to experience nipple sensation loss with breast augmentation.

Will Breast Implants Get In The Way Of Exercise?

No, breast implants should not prevent you from having an active lifestyle. You will not need to give up running, lifting weights or other forms of exercise after a breast augmentation. However, it’s important to follow aftercare instructions to have a smooth recovery and ensure optimal results. On average, patients will be healed and able to resume all forms of exercise – including heavy cardio – within six weeks of a breast augmentation.

How Soon Can Exercise Be Resumed Following Breast Augmentation?

It is generally safe to resume light walking immediately following breast augmentation. Short walks are encouraged as walking helps to prevent blood clots. However, any form of strenuous or heavy exercise should be avoided for several weeks until your surgeon gives you the green light. It’s your responsibility to follow your surgeon’s guidelines so you can heal properly.

What Are The Risks And Side Effects Of A Breast Augmentation?

Both silicone and saline breast implants are FDA-approved and widely considered safe, but like any surgery, breast augmentation comes with potential risks. These may include infection, capsular contracture (hardening of scar tissue), implant rupture or leakage, changes in nipple or breast sensation, asymmetry, or the need for revision surgery. Choosing an experienced surgeon like Dr. Lowney is the best way to reduce these risks and ensure long-term satisfaction. He will discuss all potential side effects and answer your questions during your consultation.
