Your eyes say a lot about you, including, whether you like it or not, your age. This includes the skin around your eyes; neglecting to care for the skin around the eyes can cause wrinkles, crow’s feet, and bags underneath the eyes, adding years to your appearance. The good news is there are ways to preserve or restore youth to your eyes. Dr. Mark X. Lowney of Advanced Body Sculpting of New England offers these quick and easy tips to keep your eyes looking bright and young at any age.

GET A GOOD NIGHT’S REST

There’s a reason why we call it beauty sleep. Lack of sleep accelerates the skin’s aging process and causes wrinkles, crow’s feet, and unsightly, dark circles underneath the eyes. Proper sleep gives the body enough time to produce collagen for smoother, younger-looking skin. Always aim for six to eight consecutive hours of sleep each night.

BRIGHTEN YOUR EYES WITH MAKEUP

If applied properly, makeup can create the illusion of younger-looking eyes. For starters, choose a yellow-based concealer at least two shades lighter than your skin. This will brighten your skin and hide the appearance of dark circles under your eyes. Next, try applying dark eyeliner to your top lash line and a lighter color liner to your bottom lash. Though many women like to wear dark eyeliner on both the top and bottom lash line, this is a mistake, as it draws attention to crow’s feet and makes dark circles appear darker. If you decide to wear eye shadow, apply eye primer first. An eye primer will fill in the creases on your eyelid, preventing your makeup from settling into wrinkles and calling attention to them.

GENTLY WASH OFF EYE MAKEUP

Washing your face before going to sleep removes toxins, oil, and bacteria that build up on your skin throughout the day. If you keep eye shadow or mascara on while you sleep, you run the risk of touching your eyes and rubbing the makeup into your eyes or skin. When removing eye makeup, avoid rubbing or pulling at the skin around your eyes, as it could cause irritation or wrinkles over time. Instead, gently press down on your eyes with a cotton pad soaked in makeup remover for 10 to 15 seconds.

USE PROPER SUN CARE YEAR ROUND

Overexposure to the sun can cause facial damage including dry skin, wrinkles, and sun spots around your eyes. If you plan on spending an extended amount of time outdoors, be sure to wear sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. If your eye cream or moisturizer does not contain SPF 30 sunscreen, wait until your cream is fully absorbed and then apply a layer of sunscreen. Be sure to wear UV-protective sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun and help you avoid squinting, which can cause crow’s feet.

CONSIDER BOTOX

Botox injections safely and quickly reduce the appearance of wrinkles and crow’s feet, restoring youth and beauty to your eyes in no time. A popular alternative to facelifts, Botox is injected into the facial muscles responsible for causing wrinkles. The injections relax muscles and block muscular nerve signals, keeping the muscles from contracting and leading to wrinkles and expression lines formed on the skin. Botox is a popular procedure among Dr. Lowney’s patients because it also improves the appearance of frown lines, forehead lines, and creases. Best of all, Botox is safe, cost-effective, and painless. Patients are able to enjoy their rejuvenated look almost immediately!
