Summer takes a toll on the health and beauty of the skin. Even hiding under a wide-brimmed hat and bathing in sunscreen all summer cannot completely protect the skin from wrinkles, dark sunspots, or a dull, lackluster tone.
If you wish to restore an even tone and radiant glow to your skin, Dr. Mark X. Lowney of Advanced Body Sculpting of New England has you covered. Read on for his best damage control tips.
EXFOLIATE DEAD SKIN CELLS
The first order of business is to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin; this is imperative before performing any other restorative skin care treatments. Removing dead cells helps products penetrate the skin more effectively.
Use an exfoliator with small granules that are less abrasive on delicate sun-damaged skin. You can even make your own exfoliator at home using cane or brown sugar mixed with lukewarm oil, blended until it has a cream-like consistency. Apply and gently rub the exfoliator onto the skin after a shower.
HYDRATE DRY SKIN
The next step is to use a rich moisturizing product to hydrate dry, sun-parched skin. Use a light moisturizer that can be worn under makeup during the day, and switch to a thicker formula at night to soak into your skin while you sleep.
APPLY MEDICAL-GRADE PRODUCTS
Medical-grade skin care products containing Retain-A, hydroquinone, or both are also helpful for sun-damaged skin. These topical medications work at the skin’s cellular level to reduce signs of sun damage and repair the skin’s tone and texture.

Professional intervention with Dr. Lowney’s team may be needed to reverse significant sun damage (and signs of aging exacerbated by the sun). Depending on the nature and severity of your sun damage, you may benefit from one or more of the following treatments:
- IPL photo facials help stimulate the production of fresh collagen for smoother, rejuvenated skin
- Profractional laser skin resurfacing activates the skin’s wound-healing response and increases the firmness and resilience of the skin
- Sciton Microlaser peel to vaporize the outer layer of dull, dead skin and reveal fresh skin
